It all started when…

The DevFest or “Developers Festival”, is a technical conference for developers. It is aimed at students, professionals or simply curious techies.

I have been working as an exhibitor at this show by making an augmented reality game with my team. We created a virtual world linked to the theme of space, in which our users could evolve.

The goal of the game is to associate each character with his or her home planet, by finding it in our augmented space.

Process

During my stay in Seoul, South Korea for my first year master’s degree, I got the chance to study 3D modeling and animation, as well as virtual and augmented reality as part of my study program (Digital Culture) at IDAS (International Design School for Advanced Studies), Hongik University.

A few month later I was joining Micropole as a design intern. During summer, we got a company challenge to select the best idea which was going to be part of the Devfest to represent the company.

On the theme of Space, I decided to go with an augmented reality game, which would allow visitors to associate a cartoon character with its home planet as fast as possible.
The planets appeared virtually on the tablet screen when the tablet recognised inking points in our real world setting.

I have been building my team and the idea in a few hours as the competition was only during a day, and I worked with Pauline Flambard (Full stack developer) and Julie Manceau (Art director).

We won the competition and got directly in contact with members of the GDG, organisers of the festival.
We worked all together very closely during the entire process, following an agile method to make sure to have an MVP at least, for the presentation. We finally managed to end our great project for the show, working as a very complementary team. As it happened during summer, we managed to find time among our professional projects to work together. We have been learning a lot from eachother, discovering by plunging us back into the world of augmented reality.
